The Foul [OST Comp Jam Overtime]
A downloadable soundtrack
Overview
For this composer jam, I wanted to use the images given to create a cohesive story line for the theoretical game, using the pictures in sequential order from left to right. Every Image has a dedicated track for it for 30 tracks in total. Every track is around 2 minutes so around 60 minutes in total. (The YT playlist has the images associated with each track so it's easier to follow along.)
For the sound palette, I took inspiration from Danny Elfman, and used a fusion of Latin, electronic, and stereotypical spooky elements. I used FL Studio and free VST plugins I own to create the soundtracks. It's primarily orchestral composition with some electronic dance tracks.
This Jam really challenged my ability to work quickly and efficiently while creating an in depth and cohesive story. It was challenging to output so much music consistently especially working alone.
I used several themes to represent the main character, Duckling, parental love, and the blackbox. I used an atonal theme to represent the blackbox because, to me, both atonality and artificial intelligence represent modernism stretched to it's limit. The closer you get to the blackbox, the more synthesized instruments are used.
Story
Act 1
You and Duckling leave your hometown for something better and you are running out of food. You stumble into a strange ghost town. Come into close contact with someone like you who warns you to turn back and reluctantly gives you a finicky lighter. Finds a seemingly abandoned house.
You enter the house and keys to unlock a hidden basement. You and Duckling get spotted by a strange angry man who calls you a member of "The Foul". Both of you manage to escape.
Act 2
Duckling wants to turn back but you fear the consequences and trek forward. They discover strange technology and decide to head towards the light, it promises the answer. They follow the light to the lighthouse. They stop by an abandoned warehouse and bad omens appear but they’ve come too far to stop now. Everyplace they've traveled to outside of their hometown seems to be abandoned and empty...
They explore the lighthouse and discover a black box that powers it. They discover the box is now almost useless and they feel hopeless. They explore more to another abandoned village to find food and spend time with each other and rediscover themselves. They find their reasons to keep going. Duckling explores on his own and finds something horrifying, you follow and scold Duckling for going on their own. They find an unconscious man and then proceed to get kidnapped. The man explains that The Foul are the one's who created the blackbox and humans blame them for the societal collapse.
They wind up in an oil rig and are being executed for being Foul. Duckling is getting executed first and you break free from fear to save Duckling by blowing up the warehouse with the lighter and an exposed oil tank.
